Microsoft confirms newest Surface Pro 3 battery issues

As more information and – hopefully soon – another battery fix is available from Microsoft, I’ll update this post.

We are aware of a battery issue that is affecting a limited number of Surface Pro 3 users.

Microsoft Surface Pro 3 photographed at a display in New York City in 2014. Some people’s Surface Pro 3 devices last a matter of minutes. The laptop would turn off when the battery level of the device would be at 20 percent. Initially, people believed that the cause of these battery issues was the poor quality of Simplo batteries but they were wrong. Microsoft admitted that the maker of these batteries, Simplo Technology Co., had misreported capacity. Some people believed the problems rose from the firmware update on August 29, which was ironically created to fix battery draining problems with another set of Surface Pro 3 tablets.

This time, the Surface Pro 3 is facing another issue in the form of the batteries from LGC.

Users with Surface Pro 3 units fitted with LGC batteries are reporting that their devices get stuck at a specific power percentage, labeled “Not Charging”, even when plugged in. It only displayed that the device is plugged in, but not charging and when it is taken off the power supply, the device shuts down instantly.

If you own a Surface Pro 3 you might want to do a battery test to see if your device has battery problems.

Bowman, however, clarified in her response to the said complainant that the Windows 10 software update has nothing to do with the glitches experienced in LG-made batteries. It explained that the Surface Pro 3 battery issues have become more widespread since the fix was rolled out a few months ago. Currently, the standard Microsoft Surface Pro 4 with 128 GB internal storage, 4 GB RAM, and Intel Core m3 is offered at $899 while the top-notch 256 GB internal storage, 16 GB RAM and Intel Core i7 variant costs $1,799.
