Windows Central have stated that, according to their sources, the Surface Phone is pegged for a 2017 release and will be released in 3 variants.

It was only a few days ago when we was discussing Microsoft’s lack of commitment with their phones, as there was nothing new for Windows Phone or Mobile 10 users.
The report goes on to state that the Surface Phones will not be released till sometime in 2017. Windows Central doesn’t have any information on what will be the differences between these handsets, but you can guess there will be differences in hardware and pricing while keeping a similar design language. The Surface Phone is too technical than the regular Windows Phone, since it features more icons, menus, settings and options. “We’ll bring business customers the best management, security and productivity experiences they need; value phone buyers the communications services they want; and Windows fans the flagship devices they’ll love”. There have been rumours of a Surface branded phone pretty much since rumours of the original tablet first emerged ahead of its launch (pre-2012), however, and to date nothing has materialised, so colour us a little cautious at this point.
This adds weight to this latest speculation that the Surface Phone will debut next year. It is now being reported that Microsoft will be expanding its Surface lineup by introducing a Surface branded smartphone. Are you still holding out for a Microsoft Surface Phone? It could also come with a bolstered Continuum feature which could either work with the help of an x86 Intel processor in the phone or in a dock.

Asked about what it’d take to get Microsoft to launch its own smartphone, Myerson said: ‘It would have to be something where Nokia or HTC or other primary partners were not providing the consumer experience we think was possible on our platform’. These include the fact that Windows 10 Mobile is still being developed and improved, and Microsoft needs time to come back with a strong product to disrupt the market.
