Microsoft HoloLens Release Date Early 2016: But $3000 Price Tag On Developer

But before any of those new devices were actually shown, Microsoft demoed a few exciting new HoloLens mixed-reality technology, dubbed Project X-Ray, that allowed a gamer – named Dan – to battle holographic robots right on stage, live.

Games like Project X-Ray will offer a personalized gameplay experience by adapting to players’ own rooms and surroundings. The limits of this statement will no doubt be put to the test when the first teams get their hands on the kit but, for now, fans will have to take Microsoft’s word for it.

Thankfully, it’s still something extremely impressive and shows a glimpse of the exciting future for everyone who dreamt of virtual reality gaming and interaction. It is a mixed reality gaming experience in which the player grabs and deploys a gauntlet to defend a room from a robot invasion.

The details were revealed at Microsoft’s product showcase today, with the company saying that this first edition of the HoloLens will be officially called the HoloLens Development Edition, according to Ars Technica.

We have to admit, that we’re truly intrigued as to how the HoloLens work, and might just start saving for that $3000 dev kit… Plus, Facebook’s Gear VR, a cheaper version of the headset which will retail for $99, is slated to be released by the end of the year.

Lots of gamers and tech enthusiasts were surprised to see the Microsoft HoloLens device, which went into the augmented reality direction, instead of virtual reality like the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive.

At this morning’s Windows 10 devices event, Microsoft once again demonstrated the massive potential of its HoloLens project.
