Microsoft increases parental leaves
Google, which consistently ranks among the best places to work, offers 18 weeks of paid maternity leave.

Non-birth parents are eligible for up to 12 weeks paid time off.
Everyone News10 spoke to thinks more companies will make a change to their parental leave policies.
The policy applies to the first year after a child is born or adopted.

And while it’s true that the US does provide 12 weeks of unpaid leave through the Family and Medical Leave Act, the exemptions to the law are so broad as to leave it ineffective in many cases. At the time the video-streaming firm announced this policy, CEO Reed Hastings said Netflix evaluates employees based on what they have done, not on how many hours they worked.
Some experts actually suggest having a generous vacation policy as opposed to unlimited time out, say five weeks vacation time or a specific amount of maternity leave.

“We want employees to have the flexibility and confidence to balance the needs of their growing families without worrying about work or finances”. Employees will be allowed to return and leave again if necessary and continue to earn their normal pay throughout.
So an aggressive parental leave offering for a company wanting to attract fresh talent is not totally surprising. “For those that want to implement what people call unlimited or untracked leave, the issue would really be looking at what your employee population is like”, Pamela Salgado, a shareholder at Littler Mendelson, told CorpCounsel.com. This removes any confusion and employees can be happy that the company is supportive.
Only four states-California, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Rhode Island-currently have paid maternity leave that is publicly funded.
“I work for a medium-sized company and men are shamed when they go out for longer than, you know, a couple weeks”, Sacramento resident Nancy Flores said.

Another tricky situation McDermott noted is when an employee is away on parental leave or another form of leave and the company experiences a reduction in force.
