Microsoft inks a patent and software deal with Lenovo

The pair did not disclose which devices would get the apps, and said only that Lenovo expects to ship millions of preloaded devices in the next several years.

Their partnership also includes cross exchanges patents, which cover both Lenovo and Motorola phone manufacturing subsidiary.

The Chinese group Lenovo will install a series of United States software giant Microsoft services on “millions” of its devices running Android, the mobile operating system from Google, under an agreement announced Monday.

Microsoft and Lenovo agreed today in news coming out of Beijing to offer Microsoft productivity apps, including Office, OneDrive, and Skype, on select Lenovo devices running the Android operating system.

The patent agreement is another example of the important role intellectual property (IP) plays in ensuring a healthy and vibrant technology ecosystem.

Microsoft has entered into more than 1,200 licensing agreements since December 2003.

Lenovo (HKSE:992) (LNVGY) is a US$45 billion global Fortune 500 company and a leader in providing innovative consumer, commercial, and enterprise technology.

Microsoft has a large portfolio of patents related to Android, and makes more money licensing these patents than it makes selling Windows Phone handsets, according to phoneArena.com. Each company gave a positive statement with the news, explaining how including Microsoft’s applications and services will allow customers all over the world to be more productive.
