Microsoft is sending Sunrise Calendar off into the sunset
It was only a matter of time until this happened, but it’s now official: Microsoft is shutting down the Sunrise calendar app for Android and iOS in order to focus exclusively on Outlook.

The news won’t be a surprise to those people who noticed Microsoft say in October that “Outlook will eventually replace the current Sunrise app”.
“As heartbreaking as this sounds, we’re hard at work bringing the magic of Sunrise to the Outlook apps, with all your most loved features – interesting calendars, event icons and calendar apps”. The calendar tab in the Outlook mobile app looks nearly like a clone of Sunrise. This is happening because Microsoft acquired the company behind Sunrise previous year and put its team to work on improving Outlook instead. The company said a year ago that it planned to shut down Sunrise.
In a blog post, Microsoft said it’ll no longer be supporting the application with new features or bug fixes.
While the decision to switch off Sunrise altogether is likely to frustrate its most enthusiastic fans, it’s probably better in the long-run for security since the team is upfront about the fact that no bug-fixes or other patches are in its future. Unfortunately, as all good stories go, there’s a sad bit to it: we’re not able to support and update Sunrise anymore. Last fall, Sunrise announced that it would wind down development as its developers were integrated into the Outlook team.

That will end on August 31, as Microsoft will sunset Sunrise Calendar.
