Microsoft Launches “Hey Cortana” on Android Phones

While it does not have the exact features and deep integration that it has with its Windows Phone counterpart, Cortana for Android seems to be a welcomed addition in the plethora of apps already in the Google Play store as it provides up-to-date information on what matters most for the users.

While this feature comes in handy on Windows Phone devices because you don’t even have to touch your phone in order to have it start a number of actions, such as sending a message or setting up a reminder, its behavior is different on Android, where additional input is required. As Microsoft continues to push Cortana to be a cenralized hub for everything Microsoft, Redmon has recently released an updated to the Android app. Version 1.0.0.289 is now up and is set to bring a hands-free search experience to the Android platform. The same features are available in the desktop and Edge versions of Cortana, so even if the Android preview app is too much of a stretch for you, testing out Cortana is not impossible on other platforms and devices. Users who have Microsoft’s personal assistant installed can now activate voice commands by saying ‘Hey Cortana’. Though, it brings to the table a few very helpful features, it’s still easier to use OK Google because of the familiarity that users have developed.

If the user chooses the appropriate option, Cortana is created to respond to the user’s voice when the app is open or if the screen is unlocked.

“Hey Cortana” works differently on Android devices unlike Windows smartphones.

While Cortana for Android is still in its beta stage, a number of features may not work as expected. Microsoft has yet to announce an official non-beta release date.
