Microsoft launched Windows 10 in July, making it available as a free updated for users running Windows 7 or later for the first year of availability. Even non-genuine users can upgrade now, either by upgrading and purchasing a license, or by purchasing one during the upgrade process. Combining the strengths of its predecessors, Windows 10 offers end users a host of benefits, which, in short, allow for a better and more productive user experience. The tool will soon support the creation of universal install media, capable of installing both the 32- and 64-bit versions of the operating system, in both its Home and Pro versions. Yet until people can get pretty much all the apps they can get on their iPhones or Android phones, it’s going to remain an uphill battle. It worked, and Microsoft claims that over 110 million devices are now running Windows 10.

The jury is still out on Continuum but Lumias (and Windows-based devices overall) will have better prospects if Universal Windows Platform apps appear en masse. Apparently, when a non-genuine Windows user attempts to upgrade to Windows 10, a message pops up saying that only genuine copies can update. Volume gets ducked when the system gets a notification, some devices will bluescreen if their display resolution is odd, a few codecs are still missing (although that last issue was around for a couple of builds). While older devices could take longer, a few newer, high performance devices might upgrade faster.
