Microsoft (MSFT) Slammed by the EFF for Privacy Issues

The EFF said that in a bid to achieve its goal of having a billion Windows 10 devices up and running by the end of 2018, Microsoft had adopted a strategy that trampled on two essential aspects of modern computing: user choice and privacy.

“In May 2016, in an action designed in a way we think was highly deceptive, Microsoft actually changed the expected behaviour of a dialog window, a user interface element that’s been around and acted the same way since the birth of the modern desktop”. Also unknown at this juncture is whether other carriers are updating their eligible Lumia models.

However, since the tech giant began rolling out the update on August 9th, users have been complaining about a multitude of different problems after installing the new versions. Privacy advocates have argued that Windows 10 sends back location, text input, voice input, touch input, websites you visit, and other telemetry data to Microsoft. Also, a restart will be required when finished getting the update.

Feedback on Microsoft’s community forums suggests the issue is affecting both consumers and enterprise users. Linda explained that if the Windows 10 operating system keeps on providing innovative new updates, soon enough the demand for pirated software would gradually decrease.

Microsoft expects to release a fix through Windows Update in September, but unlike the freezing bug, there is no official workaround, so for the meantime users will need to settle for Microsoft’s apology and its explanation of what went wrong.

The fault – which could potentially affect millions of users – appears to have occurred because apps that use the web cam are not supported.

“We have seen a small number of reports of unexpected behaviors following the Windows 10 Anniversary Update”.

He admitted that Microsoft had “done a poor job communicating this change out to you guys”.

He added that get webcams working and Microsoft was working on a means to fix the issue.
