Microsoft appears to be getting ready to launch a service that will let Windows 10 computer users connect to 3G and 4G LTE cellular data networks using a Microsoft SIM card.

Microsoft made available to at least some Fast Ring Windows Insiders an updated build of Windows 10 Mobile – its first new test build released in 2016.

According to the description of the application, “This app is created to work exclusively with specific Windows 10 devices and requires a Microsoft SIM card”. Service is available in some markets and offers are for domestic plans only – global roaming offers will be available soon.

The Cellular data plan can be purchased via the Windows Store.

The latest move by Microsoft is likely an attempt to compete with Apple, which also offers a SIM for selected models of iPad, allowing users to switch between mobile carriers without actually changing the SIM card. The app will be called “cellular data”. Microsoft intends to sell plans for the data app and its SIM network Windows Stores, meaning that the data might be tied to having a Microsoft Account. “We do feel a responsibility to get people to a much better place”, said Microsoft’s marketing chief, Chris Capossela.

Select Cellular data amongst others in the list of networks.

It allows you to buy the data plan as per your convenience and preferences.

The impact on you at home: The end of Windows 8 support is most likely to affect enterprises who’ve delayed upgrading, and end users who’ve had problems installing Windows 8.1.

However, a release from Transatel talks about a partnership with Microsoft on the data service.
