Microsoft re-releasing one million Xbox Live Gamertags soon
It’s about damn time!

These Gamertags are from accounts abandoned from the original Xbox era, the same source of Gamertags we used in our 2011 release.
Meanwhile, it’s still impossible to change your name on Sony’s PSN. Remember, if this is not your first time changing Gamertags, you’ll need to pay a $10 change fee. A Monday announcement from Xbox Live PR chief Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb confirmed that a slew of “nearly one million” dormant Gamertags will be made available for qualified Xbox Live Gold members starting on Wednesday, May 18, at 2pm EDT.
According to Microsoft, the names will be released over a 24-hour period, so everyone regardless of country will have an equal chance of acquiring one.
So, where did all these previously-unavailable Gamertags come from?
However, the company said there will be many Gamertags available in specific categories, such as: proper names, pop culture references, types of food, geography and travel, science and technology, math and numbers, animals, and “some of the greatest inventions of all time”.
The change is best made via Xbox.com, Microsoft says. Customers can also access these Gamertags within the Xbox App on Windows 10 and on the Xbox One console.
If interested, you can change your Gamertag from the Xbox website, Xbox app, or your Xbox One console.

Changing your Gamertag won’t impact your Gamerscore, Achievements, or your Friends list.
