Microsoft releases Cortana to Android as public beta

Microsoft today released Cortana for Android into a public beta, letting anyone download the app from Google Play and give it a try. It has released a beta version of Cortana for Android.

Cortana is able to replace Google Now, so when you press the Android home button on a phone, you’ll be greeted by Microsoft’s personal digital assistant instead of Google’s.

Cortana for Android is the companion to your Windows 10 PC.

While Cortana for Android isn’t quite as fully featured as Google Now, it looks like a fairly featured digital assistant for being in public beta. You can set reminders, search the web, track flights and do the usual voice-powered searches Cortana has always been able to handle on other platforms.

In case you’ve used Cortana on a Windows Phone handset before, it wouldn’t take much time to get settled with it on Android.

Cortana is also available on the Windows 10 desktop operating system.

That said, you still can’t activate the assistant from anywhere by saying “Hey Cortana” as you could on a PC, or the way the “OK Google” command works on mobile. When we tried the leaked build, it worked on an Android tablet. While Microsoft had initially been aiming for a late June launch, and then announced Cortana would be making an appearance in beta form for Android sometime by the end of July, both of those launch windows were missed.
