As Microsoft’s corporate VP of its Developer Division S. “Soma” Somasegar told TechCrunch, the company’s aim with Visual Studio was to make good on its promise to deliver a tool that allows developers to target all the popular platforms.

The update also comes with hundreds of new features, many focusing on debugging, diagnostics, code editing and refactoring. Visual Studio now supports C# 6, the newly released.Net 4.6, VB.Net 12, ASP.Net 5, and F# 4. The window provides developers full application debugging, performance and profiling data in near real time in tandem with Microsoft’s Application Insights service integrated within the IDE. With these cross-platform initiatives, Microsoft is making it clear that it wants to help developers build whatever they can dream up, regardless of where the end-user accesses it. “With Visual Studio 2015 hand-in-hand with Windows 10, we’ve worked with the Windows team to deliver a set of tools to build Universal Windows apps and thereby broaden the reach of your applications”. Visual Studio and.NET are providing this choice, offering the ability to target new platforms, to use new programming languages, and to take existing skills and applications to new environments.

With the release of vs. 2015, Visual Studio Community and Visual Studio Code – both of which have seen millions of downloads in a period of only a few months – have also been on the receiving end of important new updates, the latter being a stand-alone Code editor for Windows, Mac and Linux. Now, the developer can get information about code performance directly from within the editing window.

Visual Studio 2014 ties in closely with Windows 10 app ecosystem. With Visual Studio, a developer can write a computer program once and have it run across multiple devices running Windows, including desktop and mobile clients, and even the company’s experimental HoloLens holographic computing system. “If you prefer to build a mobile app experience that installs natively on the device, Visual Studio 2015 offers integrated tools for Apache Cordova, enabling you to use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (or TypeScript) to build cross-platform mobile applications that deploy to the consumer [via an] enterprise store”, Somasegar said. Visual Studio 2015 includes the latest Azure SDK 2.6 providing one-click provisioning and deployment to Azure for web sites and cloud services, along with management of all cloud resources.
