Microsoft rolls out first ‘major update’ to Windows 10

Microsoft has delivered its first major update to Windows 10 since the operating system launched this summer, claiming improvements in all aspects of the platform and user experience while adding business features that mean the platform is now ready for enterprise adoption.

“But most importantly, with this free update we have reached the point in the platform’s maturity where we can confidently recommend Windows 10 deployment to whole organizations”, wrote Terry Myerson, vice president of the Windows and Devices Group at Microsoft, in a blog post announcing the update.

Windows 10 is already actively running on more than 110 million devices including 12 million business PCs, and is compatible with the past while embracing our new way of working.

If you’re a Windows 10 user there’s a new update that you must download now.

Other Microsoft devices, including Xboxes and certain Lumia phones will also be getting Windows 10 upgrades Thursday.

It seems that a few users have discovered that Microsoft had attempted to secretly install Windows 10 on the computers of Windows 7 and 8 users without their knowledge or consent. Cortana can also keep track of your booked events like concerts and movies via email confirmations.

One user reported that Windows 10 had tried to install on his computer over 31 times.

Microsoft said there are other tweaks, too, including new enterprise options and changes to Photos, the Xbox Store, Groove, OneNote and other applications. All that is left is Windows 10 Mobile: Microsoft plans to launch the first Windows 10 phones this month and roll out Windows 10 Mobile to existing Windows Phone users in December. Last but not least, Cortana is now available in Japan, Australia, and Canada and India (in English).

You can also use Cortana to send a text message from any Windows phone you’re logged into, and it issues a notification on the phone to let you know it’s been sent, although a desktop reply alert appears not to have been built yet.

Microsoft’s Edge browser has been updated with tab view, with preview of tabs on rollover. Mobile Device Management (MDM) support also makes an appearance, which should help system administrators cope better with bring-your-own-device scenarios.

Microsoft Edge has received performance improvements across the board along with the usual assortment of security updates. Just head to Settings Update & Security Find My Device and click “Save my device’s location periodically” to enable it.
