Microsoft’s new service is like YouTube for the enterprise

Think of Microsoft Stream like a dedicated YouTube for your business.

“Employees at all levels want to do more with video, but enterprise video management today requires a lot of IT input”, said Sudheer Sirivara, an exec with Azure Media Services, in a preview video.

Microsoft has announced the public preview of Stream, a new online video service that will offer businesses a way to upload and share internal clips with employees and partners.

Watch anywhere, on any device, anytime: View videos in Microsoft Stream on all your devices from anywhere, anytime. “Microsoft Stream builds upon the learnings success of Office 365 Video and over time the two experiences will converge with a seamless migration to ensure a consistent experience both within and outside of Office 365”, Phillips writes in today’s official announcement and also notes that current Office 365 Video users will not see any differences in the service for now. Stream enables users to harness the power of video to get more done at work. As for the user experience, Microsoft is taking cues from rivals like YouTube and Vimeo along with a few new social features such as comments, likes, and video recommendations. “And we are now delivering on those experiences in business software”.

Corporate VP of Business Intelligence Products Group James Phillips tells TechCrunch the service may support speech-to-text, advanced translations, face recognition and live streaming at some point in the future. But for the moment today’s announcement will not mean anything to companies that now use Office 365 Video, Phillips wrote. For example, users will be able to assign rights to videos, remove access, set up access groups, and even make sure that the videos aren’t shared with any unknown party.

It’s still not clear what Microsoft’s ultimate pricing model for Stream will be.

Engage with content: Socialize videos by sharing via email, “Like” your favorites and embed videos to webpages within your organization. However, as more new features are added to the API, it will get more interesting.
