Microsoft shows how big a battery drain Chrome is
Microsoft Edge came first in the test with a battery time of 7:22 hours followed by Opera with 6:18 hours, Firefox with 5:09 hours and Google Chrome with 4:19 hours. In a third test assessing wireless video playback, Edge outlasted Chrome by over three hours, enough to watch an entire movie. Google Chrome lasted just four hours and twenty minutes, while the device running Microsoft Edge lasted a touch more than seven hours and twenty minutes. “We then automated each browser to perform the same series of activities: opening websites, scrolling through articles, and watching videos, opening new tabs for each task”. This test shows Edge to be the victor again, although Firefox is a very close second, something not shown by the previous test, which was done only on Surface Books.

Extended battery power is a necessity for most of us. “The Windows 10 Anniversary Update brings dozens of improvements to power efficiency, informed from analyzing customer telemetry and experiments in our controlled labs”. It aggregated telemetry from “millions” of Windows 10 devices worldwide, using actual readings from real consumers rather than lab devices.
In other words, Edge lasted 70 percent longer than Chrome. Now Microsoft is hoping to convince people to switch to Edge using a different tactic: performance metrics.
At the start of the year, Microsoft claimed Windows 10 users spent 44.5 billion minutes using Edge in just one month.
Despite being the most popular desktop browser in the world, Chrome is still a notorious resource and battery hog. That result also showed Edge offering lower power consumption than Chrome and Firefox-Opera was curiously omitted from this result.
“The results speak for themselves”, Microsoft said. It’s upto 36% – 53% more energy efficient than other browsers on Windows 10. The data presented above is consistent with real world, and reiterates the fact that Edge is more efficient than its competitors.
To know more about the improvements in-depth, refer to the Edge developed blogpost by Brandon Heenan. Background tabs are now less power-intensive and can only perform operations once per second.

Edge is a far better choice for Win 10 users, with 40% more battery life. It remains to be seen if Edge will fare any better usage stats after the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, but Microsoft seems determined to make it so by launching its better battery life campaign.
