Microsoft Corporation will buy LinkedIn Corp for $26.2 billion in its biggest-ever deal announced on Monday, giving the world’s biggest software provider access to an online network of 433 million professionals.

As per the details of the merger LinkedIn will retain its branding and product while LinkedIn’s CEO Jeff Weiner will report to Microsoft’s Satya Nadella. The deal is expected to close this calendar year.

The Bayer Monsanto acquisition isn’t the only big thing this year as Microsoft is also doing some shopping for new business ventures and expansion aids.

The LinkedIn team has grown a fantastic business centered on connecting the world’s professionals.

The move comes as Microsoft seeks to expand from being a purely software-producing firm, and as LinkedIn seeks new growth opportunities.

This is indeed a good step forward for the company, and it is being anticipated that Microsoft will soon start pushing their premium business features with LinkedIn in the days to follow.

Shares in LinkedIn, which floated in May 2011, have fallen by more than 40 per cent this year.

LinkedIn will not change much to the consumer’s eye, at least not at first.

Positioned as the “World Largest Professional Network” LinkedIn allows users to create business connections, search for jobs, and find potential clients. The company was founded in 2003 by Reid Hoffman, Jean-Luc Vaillant, Allen Blue, Konstantin Guericke, Eric Ly, Lee Hower.

The deal is Microsoft’s largest acquisition. While the owners may walk away with a lot of their own money from this deal, LinkedIn share holders will be pleased too, as the news sent stock soaring nearly 200 per cent. LinkedIn is a clear market leader for professional networking, and the company recently boasted more than 430 million members with 19 percent year on year growth.
