Google Translate has these features since quite a while, and Microsoft Translator app is soon catching up to it. However, even the Google Translate app does not support offline services for the iOS Devices. The app will provide the translation right on top of the text within the photo. The company keeps on innovating, and in one of their biggest updates, the app now works offline as well, and can translate images too. With the help of this online feature you can put up your camera on the text you want to translate and the app will generate the translations and put them in an overlay over the existing text from the camera.

The newest version of the Microsoft Translator app can download offline language packs so that you can still translate from one language to another without an internet connection, which still blows my mind.

The initial batch of offline packs include Chinese Simplified, English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Vietnamese.

It’s a handy feature to have for translating things like menus and signs when you’re traveling.

To use offline translation, Android users should head to the App Menu and hit the Offline Languages option. The feature could be useful in a foreign location where Internet access is slow, spotty or nonexistent, either through Wi-Fi or cellular.

The character-recognition feature for iPhones and other devices that run Apple’s iOS operating system is not yet available for Android devices, and the offline feature for Android gadgets is not yet available for iOS devices.
