“Every enterprise is struggling” with DevOps, said Brian Harry, a corporate vice president with the company, in an interview before the show.

Microsoft also today launched the beta of its free Visual Studio Code text editor for Windows, Mac and Linux – and it’s making the code for this tool available under an open source license, too. A preview of a new release management tool is being rolled out, along with package management features, and search tools that work across both Microsoft‘s own source code management tools and any Git repositories you’re using. VS Dev Essentials includes access to Visual Studio Community, Visual Studio Code and new Visual Studio Team Services; priority forums support; Parallels Desktop for Mac; training from Pluralsight, Wintellect and Xamarin; a $25 monthly Azure credit coming early next calendar year; and more.
Microsoft officials made the announcement on the first day of its two day Connect (); 2015 virtual event for developers. He compares it to working with tools like Node.js and its npm package manager: “If you’re a Node developer you just do npm to get what you want”. Visual Studio Dev Essentials is a grab bag of tools and services that promises everything you need to create applications on any device, operating system or technology. Details are available at http://www.visualstudio.com. Microsoft already offers Visual Studio subscriptions as part of its MSDN developer network service, but these new subscriptions are “optimised for small and walk-up organisations”, according to the company’s press briefing, and can be paid for as part of your Azure billing.
Last but not least among the highlights from Connect, Microsoft is introducing the free Visual Studio Dev Essentials program, which serves as a portal to help developers find the Microsoft tools they need. The Microsoft Graph is hosted at http://graph.microsoft.com. These range for a new free program for developers who are just getting started, all the way to a new subscription service, a marketplace for extensions, updates to.NET, and the renaming of Visual Studio Online.
Initial extensions include support for Google’s Go language, Object Pascal, and a spell checker.
Microsoft’s developer platform is open by design, allowing developers to target any device and platform, including iOS, Android, Linux and Windows. The company on Wednesday released new versions of popular tools that further enable developers to quickly create innovative apps and services.
Microsoft has a sign-up form on its website that will notify Mac users when more info on the upcoming release becomes available.
Visual Studio Code has been already downloaded more than 1 million times in preview, Microsoft said. The beta release will also add extensibility, with support for the new Visual Studio Marketplace and almost 100 extensions at launch. Developers can learn more at http://www.visualstudio.com. The forked, open source version of the.NET platform, called .NET Core, is now at Release Candidate status, as is ASP.NET 5.0, Microsoft’s web application framework.
Microsoft has been a pioneer in empowering enterprise development teams with tools for agile and DevOps practices including Team Foundation Server and Visual Studio Online. The company today introduced Visual Studio Team Services, an enhanced and rebranded version of the Visual Studio Online service with 3.6 million existing registered users.

Visual Studio 2015 Update 1 is also expected become available at the end of this month with a variety of new features, but meanwhile a new online marketplace is making its debut this week. Perhaps that is related to there being more news about Android support than for Windows Mobile.
