Mig-21 crashes in Rajasthan

A MiG-21 aircraft crashed in Rajasthan’s Barmer on Saturday, but the pilot and co-pilot managed to eject safely.

A Court of Inquiry into the crash has been ordered by the IAF. “There is no information of any loss of life or property so far”, Gagandeep Singla, a superintendent of police, Barmer, said. Both the pilots of the aircrft ejected safely, a spokesperson of the IAF said here.

Two houses in the area where the MiG-27 aircraft crashed were reportedly damaged. The crash occurred at 12.15 p.m., said the officials. There have bee 25 accidents of fighter planes since April 2002 of which 13 involved were MiG fighter aircraft, because of which it has often been described as a “Flying Coffin”.

However, no loss of life has been reported till now in this accident.

Last year, an MiG-21 crashed in Soibugh in the Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir. In 2013, a MiG-21 Bison fighter had crashed killing the pilot.
