Indian Navy says, “Prompt action by ground support staff resulted in the quick dousing of the fire”.
There were no reports of injuries or damage to the aircraft or the runway.
The Navy ordered an investigation into the incident. The fire broke after the fuel drop tank of a MiG-29K fighter aircraft jettisoned accidentally.
Before landing, the crew dropped another fuel tank, which was empty.
Residents were alarmed when the jettisoned second fuel tank fell in a parking area in the CISF quarters, not far from the HPCL Refinery. When the aircraft came back for landing, the second drop tank fell off near the CISF quarters. The aircraft has to have equal weight on both wings while landing.
INS Dega is a Naval air station in Visakhapatnam.
“But due to the malfunction of the system, it could that did not happen”.
The MiG-29K aircraft can fly in the sky at the maximum speed at 2000 km/hr.
