Migaloo off Gold Coast? Whale watchers disagree on what whale they watched
Although the white whale was indeed a humpback, initial suggestions that it was the famed Migaloo were soon dismissed after Seaworld’s marine scientists went in for a closer look.

The white humpback sighted north of the Gold Coast Seaway in Queensland today is the world-famous Migaloo, an authority on whales said.
The jury is still out on whether a rare white whale spotted off the Queensland coast was the famous humpback Migaloo but there’s unanimous agreement about one thing, it’s great for whale lovers.
Southern Cross University academic Wally Franklin first sighted Migaloo in 1992.
“He literally has become the ambassador for the whales and a national treasure”.
Whale watchers are hoping it was Australia’s famous whale named Migaloo.
If the sighting is confirmed, it will be the first sighting of the iconic whale since his migration up the east coast of Australia previous year.
“Migaloo is a full adult male and this animal that we saw today is a lot smaller”.
“It’s probably Migaloo Junior”, Mr Peterson told AAP.
Oskar Peterson, who runs a Twitter account dedicated to raising awareness about Migaloo, told Mashable he believes more photos are needed to confirm that this is the same whale.
He said there was one other known white whale but it had black spots on its tail.
