And yet the governors of Texas, Michigan, Louisiana, Alabama and a growing list of other states are now saying, basically, that the USA can’t risk accepting a single one of these desperate people – apparently because someone with a Syrian passport reportedly was involved in last week’s horrific terrorist attacks in Paris.

“We are aware of recent statements by a few governors regarding the resettlement of Syrian refugees into their states”, it said in a statement.

Various Republican presidential hopefuls also insisted on Sunday that in the wake of the Paris attacks, America must not take in Syrian refugees because they might include Islamic State militants.

The Department of Homeland Security said that refugees were subject to security checks by the State Department, the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the intelligence community. “We are deeply disturbed by language that demonises refugees as a group”. She said in Geneva that numerous migrants “are fleeing extremism and terrorism from the very people associated with the Paris attacks” and called for improved registration and vetting procedures to address security concerns.

Klarides said the federal government approached the governor’s administration a year ago about housing 2,000 Mexican immigrants at the Southbury Training School but the approach was rejected.

Snyder had welcomed the refugees for humanitarian reasons as well as to address the state’s job and population loss. The Journal says more than 4,800 refugees from 36 countries entered North Carolina in 2014 and 2015.

“Ultimately, I do think Europeans and North Americans have to be a part of reaching out to the victims of terror in the Middle East and providing safe refuge in order to help solve the crisis”, he said.

“Our emphasis is on admitting the most vulnerable Syrians – particularly survivors of violence and torture, those with severe medical conditions, and women and children – in a manner that is consistent with USA national security”, it said.

“Now he wants to use taxpayer money to close off the rest of the state’s thousands of miles of border to Syrian refugees, whether they’re flying from NY or driving from Texarkana?”

Indeed, the majority of the Paris attackers identified by authorities are French or Belgian nationals, including the reported mastermind of the bloodbath-27-year-old Abdelhamid Abaaoud, who is Belgian.

On Monday, Dalrymple chose not to oppose allowing refugees from the war-torn country to resettle in the state, as more than half the nation’s governors have done this week.
