Migrant family separations: Republicans scramble as border crisis grows
The more conservative bill, moved by judiciary committee chairman Bob Goodlatte, would make it a criminal offence to overstay a visa in the United States; cut legal immigration by 25 per cent; and allow recipients of the now-cancelled Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program – which covered some people who were brought to the USA illegally as children – to remain in the United States on three-year renewable work visas.

But Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY signaled that no such support would be coming, saying it’s already in Trump’s power to keep the families together.
His resistance suggests Republicans will struggle to find an honorable exit from an issue that’s playing poorly for them amid wall-to-wall coverage from a hostile press corps, denunciations from religious leaders, and official protests from foreign countries.
Since the policy went into effect, more than 2,200 children have been isolated from their parents, and many are now housed in crowed shelters – prompting fury from religious leaders, immigrant advocates, and child health specialists alike.
In a rare comment, Mrs Trump spoke against the Trump administration’s harsh policy, saying the United States needs to be “a country that governs with heart”. “I’m committed to finding a solution that preserves the respect for the rule of law and secures our borders while being compassionate to these young children”. But when people come up, they have to know they can’t get in.
He uses the word “infest” to describe migrants coming to the USA illegally.
There has been a sharp increase in the number of families crossing over after a federal court said the government can not detain them, not even fraudulent families. “Not only do they believe the lives of immigrant and brown children don’t matter, they campaign on racism and use these children as pawns”.
Top conservatives, including key allies of the president, have also announced they are introducing bills to stop the administration’s “zero-tolerance” approach to illegal border crossings.
As the adults are being charged, their children are then separated and deemed to be unaccompanied minors. Officials couldn’t say how numerous 2,342 children had been united as of this week.
He said he’s requesting a “third option” from Congress that will allow officials to detain children and parents together as a family unit.
Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL), a leading pro-immigration Republican, told TPM that House members were “still massaging” the legislative language to end family separation.
But the Trump administration points out that most of those migrants never showed up for court.
The revision would also give the Department of Homeland Security the authority to use $US7 billion ($9.5 billion) in border technology funding to pay for family detention centres, the source said.
The focus has shifted to a new plan to keep children in detention longer than now permitted, but with their parents.
At the Tuesday rally, tech workers mixed with immigrants and activists, all horrified at the images of children being torn from their parents. They disappear into the shadows, rarely showing up for their deportation hearings.
A group led by Senator Orrin Hatch wrote Attorney General Jeff Sessions demanding a pause in separations, while Senator John Cornyn was drafting “emergency” legislation to allow families to remain intact while their cases are adjudicated. But a outcome was that when parents were charged and taken to jails, their children couldn’t follow. Ted Cruz and John Cornyn who have already announced they’re writing a counterpiece of legislation Is it that hard for Republicans to get behind a Democrat-introduced piece of legislature, or are they really willing to let children sleep in cages where babies have their diapers changed by other children so Republicans can take their sweet time throwing together their own version of legislation?
