Migrant-kicking camerawoman charged with ‘breach of peace’

Petra Laszlo, a television camerawoman accused of kicking and tripping refugees as they ran past a Hungarian police line, was indicted Wednesday by prosecutors.

Prosecutors have now charged her with breaching the peace.

Petra Laszlo was filmed appearing to kick a young man and a girl as crowds fled police near the country’s southern border with Serbia previous year.

It later emerged that Laszlo, who was sacked over her actions, had been working for N1TV, an internet-based television station close to Hungary’s far-right Jobbik party.

While that may be true, it looks like she’s finally facing the repercussions of her momentary lapse in judgement.

Zsolt Kopasz, the chief prosecutor of Csongrad County, said in a statement that after a thorough investigation, it was determined that there was no “reasonable chance” for Laszlo’s actions “to cause injury”.

The Syrian man allegedly tripped up by Laszlo was later given a job by a Spanish football coaching school, while his son ran with superstar Cristiano Ronaldo onto the pitch in Madrid before a match.

The migrant man with the small child was later identified as Osama Abdul Mohsen.

But prosecutors concluded that Mr Mohsen “fell” as “one of the policemen tried to catch and restrain him”.

A year ago she told the Hungarian newspaper Magyar Nemzet she felt remorse over what had happened. “I am not heartless (or) racist”. Petra Laszlo, who was working for the N1TV in Hungary previous year, was directly behind police officers, filming the migrants. “I am a woman, a mother of small children, who has since lost her job, and who made a bad decision in panic”.

Prosecutors described how hundreds of migrants broke through a police cordon and out of a holding area and headed toward Szeged, a nearby city in September a year ago.

Hungary will be holding a referendum on whether to accept European Union migrant quotas on October 2.
