Migrants: more than a million arrive in the EU
According to the United Nations refugee agency and the International Organization for Migration, more than 1 million refugees made it in Europe, while 3,600 others died or went missing.

The main gateways for refugees into Europe are the Greek islands of Lesbos and Kos which are situated across a narrow stretch of the Aegean from the Turkish mainland.
This brings the total tally for maritime migrant fatalities this year to 3,692, plus at least 30 more deaths reported by African migrants striving to enter Europe via Spain’s Canary Islands.
Germany alone has received a million refugees and migrants this year, although many were already within Europe.
William Lacy Swing, the chief of IOM, also gave a statement, explaining that while migration was inevitable and even desirable, it’s not enough to count the ones arriving. In March, the EU’s executive arm will introduce “smart borders” policies to control entry and exit, better register travelers and change the rules governing the Schengen passport-free zone that allows people to travel without border checks or visas through many countries in Europe. Germany has seen around 1 million migrants arrive this year, but that figure includes large numbers of people from eastern European countries who could be sent back.
He called for European countries to recognise the positive contributions made by refugees and migrants and to honour what he said were “core European values: protecting lives, upholding human rights and promoting tolerance and diversity”.
Guterres said there was need for a “New Deal” between the worldwide community, especially Europe, and Syria’s neighbours who have born the brunt of the refugee influx caused by the civil war.
“We must also act”, he said. Only 34,215, or 3 percent, of people have entered Europe via land routes.
After an initial chaotic reaction which resulted in tens of thousands of people moving from Greece through the Western Balkans and northwards, and finding themselves blocked at various borders, a more coordinated European response is beginning to take shape. Only about 5,000 migrants have crossed into Greece by land.
The figures were revealed by the International Organisation for Migration, which said the million mark was exceeded on Monday.
The number represents a fourfold rise on the total previous year.

“We never thought it would reach this level”. An additional 150,000 migrants arrived in Italy from North Africa.
