Mikaela Shiffrin – Team USA’s Golden Girl?
Vonn won a bronze medal in the downhill, but skied out of Thursday’s slalom leg of the Alpine combined in what was likely her last Olympic race. Shiffrin closes out the 2018 Games with a gold medal in giant slalom, fourth in slalom and now a silver medal in the alpine combined.

Over coffee last November at Lindsey Vonn’s home in Colorado, Sofia Goggia of Italy asked her friend for some advice.
A smiling Shiffrin happily accepted her silver medal and moved quickly to acknowledge the bigger picture of her Pyeongchang Olympic experience.
“To win a gold medal in the GS was one of the most emotional feelings I ever had”, said Shiffrin, who collapsed on the snow, overwhelmed with joy, when her winning time flashed on the scoreboard. You saw in it real joy.
Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson scored in the first extra round of the first shootout tiebreaker in Olympic women’s hockey history on Thursday to give the United States the gold medal with a 3-2 victory.
“It’s incredible – the energy, everything just to be part of the Olympic Games”, Muir said.
Still, by winning silver Thursday, Shiffrin guaranteed the USA its sixth best total of alpine skiing medals in the history of the Games with three. The others: Vonn (three), Julia Mancuso (four), Bode Miller (six). Wendy Holdener, Gisin’s teammate, won the bronze.
One of the hardest – perhaps the hardest – thing to do at this level of big-time sports is to meet, or beat, the expectation game.
She was skiing again for America, draping herself in the flag afterward after being bullied online for saying she would not accept an invitation to the White House after the Games.
The skating coach, now 45, got to witness one of her students, US women’s hockey player Megan Keller, win a gold medal at the Winter Olympics in a 3-2 shootout win over Canada – with her two children sitting in the stands at Gangneung Ice Center sharing the exciting moment.
Hirscher fell short in his quest for a third gold medal at the Pyeongchang Olympics. But five-for-five was never going to happen.
“Her formative years skiing came on the 150-foot hill he built on an old cow pasture in Milton, Wisconsin”. She skipped super-G and downhill. “You try to handle it with grace”. She plans to continue racing, but can’t possibly see an Olympics at the age of 37 with the toll it has taken on her body. Then third in DH.
The next day came the Slalom, her preferred race and the one in which she is often seconds ahead of her nearest competitors in recent years.
“To return to the Olympics was the biggest goal and that’s why I’ve had a smile on my face every day I’ve been in South Korea”, said Vonn, who won a bronze medal in Wednesday’s downhill.

“I’m not going to stop ski racing until I break it”, Vonn said during her press conference at the Main Press Centre here. She is expected to continue to pursue the all-time record of 86 wins held by Ingemar Stenmark of Sweden. Suffering an injury, Shiffrin only competed in five slalom races during the 2016 season. Her leadership skills? The relationship between Mikaela and her mother, Eileen: as is normal with young women in their 20s, how will it evolve? I put my boots on and I was really with my center. But four years ago he fell in the unorthodox second-run gates set by Ante Kostelic, whose son Ivica was a four-time Olympic medalist from Croatia.
