‘Mike and Dave’ needs more than a wedding date

As dumb as “Mike and Dave” can get, it’s a surprisingly fun summer comedy and icing on the (wedding) cake for fans of the raunchiest of humor. With their little sister’s wedding on the horizon, the two are asked to bring dates that’ll keep them in check.

That said, I have to again go back to the strength of Plaza and Kendrick’s performances, which add yet more impact to the realization that some of our best film comics today – think Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig – are actresses who often outdo their male counterparts in delivering really, really amusing big-screen moments. “And inevitably, you’re forced into these scenarios that are amusing and awkward”. Mike and Dave live a very happy life until their sister tells them about her wedding plans and that is when the two brothers have to find a suitable date for the wedding of their sister, and according to the tradition of their family it was mandatory for them to get dates for the wedding of their sister and that is the main theme for the movie when they set out to look out for their dates. Plus, it has roots in reality. So far this year, we have seen him in Dirty Grandpa, then Neighbors 2: Sorority rising and now he plays another “Man-Child” as Dave in Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. While it isn’t my type of comedy, there is a segment of the population who will find much of the laughs appealing and the writing itself isn’t frightful. “And we sort of bit off way more than we could chew there”. Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza play roommates Alice and Tatiana.

Bad Neighbours writers Andrew Jay Cohen and Brendan O’Brien are the Farrelly Brothers of this generation and while they seem to be aiming for There’s Something About Mary or Wedding Crashers’ heights, they instead deliver something closer to Stuck on You or Say It Isn’t So, filling the plot with questionable characters behaving badly. Their camaraderie is infectious: At the screening we attended, audience members laughed out loud for most of the film.

For those who appreciate a good old-fashioned non-thinking comedy, Mike And Dave is a solid effort from a team that has proven they make movies that appeal to a certain segment of the populations.

To the guys’ horror, the sweet teacher and hedge fund manager they take to Hawaii as parent-pleasing dates turn out to be them – on steroids. Go see it for yourself if you’re game, ’cause you never know if a shredded Hollywood star’s just gonna pop in and make you flip your popcorn box over your head like the potato that you are. In a great tremendous opening sequence, which just puts lights on what Mike and Dave just recalled as a polite family bonding time with a awful reality.
