Mike Ashley criticised by Kevin Keegan

The Magpies’ only realistic hope of staying up is for Sunderland to pick up a maximum of one point at home to Everton and at Watford on Sunday, while United would need to beat second-placed Spurs at St James’ Park.

Newcastle managing director Lee Charnley has promised a full inquest after the club was relegated from the Barclays Premier League for the second time in seven years.

Rotherham United fans have voiced their support for their manager to stay on next season but Warnock is now reviewing his options with Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers and Cardiff City all thought to be interested in making a move for the experienced Championship boss.

Rafael Benitez believes there is a “good chance” he will remain at Newcastle, despite their relegation from the Premier League. “I think they will go down but they’ll bounce back”.

“My heart is telling me yes, it is a great opportunity, city and club”, the former Chelsea and Liverpool boss told BBC Sport.

That’s right. I’m calling shenanigans because of news involving Everton wanting to sign Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez. Even more positive than I was expecting.

Once Newcastle’s final game is out the way, Benitez will speak face-to-face with Ashley to discuss plans going ahead.

He handed responsibility for the day-to-day running of the club to his football board of Charnley, chief scout Graham Carr, club ambassador Bob Moncur and then head coach Steve McClaren last summer with Benitez having since replaced McClaren, and he can not have been impressed by what has happened since.

He said: “I like the idea, I am really pleased here, I am flattered with the support that I have from everyone”.

“I know it’s a huge football club and I know he’s been very impressed with how the fans have taken to him, but I’d be amazed if he stayed”. I’m sure (Wales manager) Chris (Coleman) will be desperate for him.

“They deserve to go down for treating supporters with utter contempt for the best part of nine years under Mike Ashley’s toxic ownership”. We know the fans have been supporting the team in hard circumstances.
