Mike Mayock thinks Carson Wentz compares to Andrew Luck

Mayock stamped North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz with some high praise in suggesting that his ceiling as a quarterback is similar to that of the Indianapolis Colts star. “It was a challenging test, but I feel like it’s not really as challenging if you know how to take a test. It’s all mental”. He’s a great athlete for 6 foot 7. Who’s that next middle-round that can get you to the playoffs, if he needed to start down the road? “So you start doing homework on the kid and yeah, he’s only got 23 starts but he’s 20-3 as a starter at a great program in Division I-AA, [with] five consecutive national championships”. “I see a ceiling similar to Luck”.

But if McCloughan and the Redskins believe they can get one of these players or another gifted player later in the draft, some cornerbacks could come into play.

I asked Williams about the importance of the Combine and he said,”It’s relevant because it’s a challenge, to see how you are”. I’d compare him more to the kid from SC that’s a free agent with Chicago this year [Alshon Jeffery]. A little bit like [UCLA’s] Myles Jack in the sense that I saw him take a big leap forward as a full three-down linebacker this year. His character apparently is off the charts. That’s what I was told by everybody surrounding the Senior Bowl that had any dealings with him. “Smart, tough, loves the game”.

Goff and Wentz are considered to be the top two quarterbacks in a class with a lot of questions.

Browns fans will have the opportunity to watch Wentz, Goff and the rest of the quarterback prospects on Saturday when the quarterbacks go through their position drills at the combine.

While Mayock didn’t exactly weigh in on Bradford’s future, he seemed to lean toward the Eagles drafting a franchise quarterback, with one name in particular being the focus: Paxton Lynch out of Memphis. Mayock had interesting thoughts about the Patriots possible options at the end of the 2nd round. “And I think the good news is we’re so deep on defense, so defensive tackles and the corners especially, it’s going to be a good year for those groups”.

“Who’s the next Kirk Cousins?” In this one, the Bucs take the pass rusher you have all been waiting for.

Mayock has ranked Wentz first among this year’s quarterbacks, ahead of Cal’s Jared Goff. “If there’s any cloudiness or murkiness around that knee between now and the draft, teams are going to look at it differently, and since we don’t know yet what it is, I can’t go there, but I think that’s as close as I can get today”. No clue. And I watched I think it was Northern Iowa, and I watched this big kid swing the ball around the lot, and then on top of it, was athletic enough where they planned quarterback runs for him. He struggled early, but his career got better and better, and he’s one of those guys. Zero interceptions in two years.

“They both scare me because they’re really talented, big arm, big-body kids that you want to believe in but the tape is really bad”, Mayock said.

“The way I look at Wentz, the first tape I put in, I went ‘Wow,”‘ Mayock said. Other teams potentially in need of quarterback help are the Philadelphia Eagles at 13, the Los Angeles Rams at 15 and the Houston Texans at 22. “I’m just saying from a football situation, I think he made a mistake”.

Mayock thinks Kansas State’s Cody Whitehair, LSU’s Vadal Alexander, and Texas A&M’s Germain Idefi fit that profile, but they’re likely second-round picks.
