Mike Pence Releases His Tax Returns; Donald Trump Still Won’t
If Trump doesn’t release his tax returns, he’ll be the first major party nominee not to do so in decades.

Mrs Clinton and her husband, former president Bill Clinton, earned adjusted gross income of US$10.6 million in 2015 and paid US$3.6 million in federal income taxes, according to a tax return her campaign released last month – after previously releasing eight years of returns in 2015.
His income topped out at $187,000 while he was still a member of Congress, but dropped to $113,000 past year.
‘We’re pleased to see that one member of the Trump ticket has chose to meet the long-held threshold for disclosure in a modern-day presidential campaign, ‘ said Christina Reynolds, the Clinton campaign’s deputy communications director.
Gov. Pence and his wife, Karen, donated about 8 percent of their incomes to charity.
On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine made public their tax data last month.
Pence reported that he and his wife Karen earned a total of $113,026 in adjusted gross income previous year, most of it from his salary as governor of in and including almost $9,000 in pensions or annuities. Because they withheld more taxes during the year than they owed, they received a refund of $10,162.
No law prevents Mr Trump from releasing returns that are under audit, though allies have cited advice from lawyers that it would be unwise for him to do so.
Karen Pence, a self-employed artist, reported earning $495 and spending more than that on expenses.
“I always tell people – I mean, but for a whole lot of zeroes, he and I have an terrible lot in common”, Pence cracked on Thursday. Trump has submitted the required personal financial disclosure form, which includes details of his business interests.
Pence has defended Trump’s decision, calling questions about it “a distraction by many in the media who simply don’t want to focus on this widening scandal around the Clinton Foundation”.
Unlike that of his new boss, Pence’s tax situation is a fairly simple affair. The returns would reveal his reported income, his charitable donations and his aggressiveness in trying to minimize taxes.
Christina Reynolds, a deputy spokeswoman for Clinton’s campaign, added: “As prominent Republicans have speculated, Trump’s returns could reveal further ties to Russian Federation and its oligarchs, the truth about his personal wealth, or more lies about his charitable contributions”.

The “routine audit” has largely been the standard line from Trump’s campaign, though the IRS has said that audits do not prohibit people from making their tax returns public. Mr Trump has said another condition under which he’d release the information is if Mrs Clinton released e-mails that were deleted from the private server she used as secretary of state, an arrangement that has emerged as one of her biggest political liabilities and one the Federal Bureau of Investigation director called careless.
