Mike Pettine stands by McCown over Manziel as Browns’ starting QB

Cleveland Browns quarterback Josh McCown (13) is sacked by Buffalo Bills defensive end Jerry Hughes during the first quarter of an NFL preseason football game, Thursday, August 20, 2015, in Cleveland. “I think all those years that I spent in Baltimore being behind Joe (Flacco) prepared me for this opportunity that I have now and I’m taking everything that I’ve learned previously and I’m putting it towards my game”. Don’t want to get too wrapped up in the big picture stuff. “Our thoughts on the quarterback picture are the same this morning as they were going into last night”.

McCown was very solid as well though, and it’s going to take some monstrous production for Manziel to unseat him.

As Pettine correctly pointed out, McCown was playing against first-teamers on what was one of the NFL’s best defenses a year ago. He can still improvise but is starting to show he can make some throws with his feet planted. But our protection wasn’t what it should be. He came away with not one, but two interceptions for Buffalo. “I felt like things were slowing down still”. I’m trying to make an impression and leave a little bit of a lasting memory coming off these games. But the story was that Tyrod Taylor seemingly took more forward steps in the competition.

“Everything, the read, to step up, the play from the pocket – it was everything as a young quarterback you want to see him grown into”, McCown said. We’ll go with one guy to start the season. He overcame some early adversity to lead the Bills on a game-winning touchdown drive with under two minutes remaining in the game, finding rookie Andre Davis on a 14-yard touchdown pass on fourth and goal, then following it up with a connection to Bronson Hill for the game-winning two-point conversion.

With zero help from his offensive line, Robert Griffin III repeatedly wound up on the turf until leaving with a concussion after being sacked three times and fumbling twice Thursday night in the Washington Redskins’ 21-17 exhibition victory over the Detroit Lions.

Manziel’s 21-yard touchdown pass to Shane Wynn had coach Mike Pettine lifting both fists above his head in celebration.

Quick hitters: Pettine said the majority of players who sat out the Buffalo game are expected to return for Saturday’s light practice.

Perhaps it’s best those calls went unheeded.

“Not good, not good”, McCown said. “Just super cautious. Everything is fine”. Ryan will be assessed and evaluated as he’s competing for both quarterback and running back in the final 53-man roster, and Manziel will be hoping to showcase that he can be a starting quarterback in Cleveland Browns. That to me comes down the road.
