Mike Richards reaches settlement on terminated contract

The Kings terminated Richards’ contract on June 29 for a breach of requirements.

Mike Richards has reportedly reached a settlement with the Los Angeles Kings.

The National Hockey League Players’ Association announced in a press release Friday that it has reached a settlement with the National Hockey League regarding former Los Angeles Kings forward Mike Richards’ terminated contract.

“The terms are agreeable to all parties”, the Kings said in a statement.

At the time of termination, Richards’ contract still carried five-years and $22 million.

Richards was a member of the Kings” Stanley Cup teams in 2012 and “14. The 30-year-old was questioned and held at the United States-Canada border in mid-June and was charged with possession of a controlled substances while attempting to enter Canada on August. 25.

Richards agreed to a 12-year, $69 million contract extension with the Flyers in December 2007.

He never scored more than 44 points in a season with Los Angeles, although coach Darryl Sutter praised his two-way play and leadership during the Kings’ three-year run of playoff excellence.

Earlier this week it was reported that Richards and the team were working on a possible settlement aimed at avoiding arbitration that, if won by Richards, could prove extremely costly to the Kings, both in terms of money and a roster spot. Richards will be appearing in Emerson Provincial Court on September 10th, 2015.

Richards, who of course is former captain of the Philadelphia Flyers, is now an unrestricted free agent.
