Militants planning to attack Amarnath Yatra: BSF

Security agencies on Sunday claimed to have identified one of the militants on a CCTV footage as Junaid Matoo, a local resident who joined banned Lashker-e-Taiba (LeT) previous year, and was allegedly involved in Saturday’s killing of two Jammu and Kashmir police personnel at a bus stand in Anantnag.

A police official identified the deceased cops as Assistant Sub-Inspector Bashir Ahmed Ahangar son of Abdul Aziz a resident of Laktipora Aismuqam and Reyaz Ahmed Sheikh son of Ali Muhammad of Watarso Shangus. “I got the information that just before two policemen have lost lives in Anantnag attack”.

Raina said that the frequent attacks by the militants were “demoralizing” the forces in the state.

Three BSF personnel were killed and four others critically injured when terrorists ambushed their convoy near Bijbehara on Srinagar-Jammu national highway today.

Also controversial is the BJP demand for separate resettlement colonies for Kashmiri Pandits who had to migrate out of the state when militancy was at its height in the state. Eyewitnesses said that militants opened fire on a convoy bus that was jam packed. Both policemen were posted at Police post General Bus Stand Anantnag.

Militant attacks in Kashmir have escalated since the past two months.

The attack has come three days after J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti filed her nomination papers for the assembly by elections from Anantnag constituency. “If condemnation for killing of security forces then what about the human rights violation done by the state”, Er.Rashid reacted to the BJP legislators.

She also praised the security forces and the police for exercising restraint to ensure that the innocent civilians do not suffer due to any retaliatory action.

Mehbooba condemned the attacks as “senseless violence perpetrated by enemies of peace”.

Mufti said the elements inimical to interests of Jammu and Kashmir have always tried to derail the peace efforts and the latest militant strike was again aimed at subverting the peace and development initiatives launched by her government. Meanwhile, separatist leader Yasin Malik was arrested for assaulting a policeman. His re-arrest triggered protests by his supporters and party men in Maisuma area and police fired teargas canisters to quell the surging crowds and push them back into dark alleys of the congested locality which has since been placed under strict security restrictions.
