Miller joins Indians, ready to contribute in any role
Could a rare Red Sox – Yankees trade go down to help boost Boston to the playoffs?

The Cleveland Indians have been busy the last 24 hours, first nearing a deal for catcher Jonathan Lucroy of the Milwaukee Brewers and now having officially agreed to a trade to bring dominant left-handed reliever Andrew Miller to Cleveland from the New York Yankees. The Indians were one of eight teams on Lucroy’s no-trade clause and there apparently was an issue he had with them regarding Lucroy’s request to have the Indians remove the option year for 2017 which would have made Lucroy a free agent.
It’s a bitter pill to swallow for Yankees fans so used to meaningful October baseball, but the organization now has its sole focus on future seasons.
Cleveland, which leads the AL Central, has been looking for a catcher since Yan Gomes separated his shoulder in July.
“It certainly should help us a lot”, Francona said.
“I was shocked, but ultimately, when everything settled in, I knew I was coming to a good place, a good team”, Miller said during a news conference August 2.
With Cody Allen as the Indians’ closer, Miller will likely serve as the team’s set up man. The Indians have had trouble getting games to Allen in the ninth inning.
The Indians sent four minor leaguers, including highly touted outfielder Clint Frazier, to NY for the 31-year-old Miller, who is expected to arrive in Cleveland on Sunday night and could be ready to join the bullpen when the club opens a four-game series against Minnesota.
The 21-year-old Frazier will report to Triple-A Scranton, where he will be in competition with Aaron Judge, another outfielder and top Yankees prospect. “That’s very meaningful. So I want to talk to all of them together at one point before we get started just so we’re all on the same page”. They went and got the best there is. They still had Betances and Miller to hold down the fort. Now there is another member of their bullpen that is about to be heading out. The starting rotation gets a lot of credit, deservedly so.
Tyler Clippard’s career has spanned for 13 seasons as he has played for the Washington Nationals, New York Mets, Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, and most recently the Arizona Diamondbacks. “We’re not thinking about two years from now, we’re thinking about winning in 2016”. He’s got all the tools – he can run, he can hit, he can hit with power, he can play all three outfield positions. 273 with 13 home runs, 48 RBIs, 58 runs and 25 doubles.
Baltimore hopes Wade Miley can turn his solid July into a big finish with the AL East leaders. He pitched seven innings of one-hit ball in Seattle’s 4-1 against the major league-leading Chicago Cubs on Saturday.
Seattle received Cuban left-hander Ariel Miranda in the trade.
Since 2014, Duke has appeared in 198 games, which ranks fourth in the majors. Miller has a lifetime ERA of 4.35, but in each of the last six years, he has not had a season ERA over 3.35. He made 169 career starts, all from 2005 to 2013. Miller has mostly been a setup man, which is what he was with the Yankees this year, pitching mostly in the eighth inning.
Earlier, Miller had said similar things about Betances, describing him as “one of the best two or three relievers in baseball”.

He is making $4.1 million this year and is due $4.15 million next season in salary.
