Miller’s late TD guides Bears past Chargers

Trailing by nine points after three quarters, the Chicago Bears rallied to beat the San Diego Chargers 22-19 Monday night.

“It’s one of those things where instincts kind of take over”, Miller told chicagobears.com.

Cutler went 27-40 for 345 yards and two touchdowns on the day while Alshon Jeffery had ten catches for 151 yards.

“We have got to figure out how to win in the fourth quarter”, Cutler said. But the overall is that the defense tightened in the second half, shut out the Chargers in the fourth quarter and adjusted well as the game went on. That’s what the National Football League is about. There’s an open line of communication in the building, especially between Pace, John Fox and director of player personnel Josh Lucas. “But they’ve done a really good job with him”.

“I’ve got to watch the film, but I feel like (Jeffery) got pulled a little bit”, Cutler said. For what it’s worth, I too had Fuller ranked higher than Verrett (more on the 2014 draft below, as this week’s game against St. Louis has an interesting connection too).

“I couldn’t happen to a better guy”, Cutler said about Miller’s success. “For him to come up with a catch, it was something special”.

If this is Jay Cutler’s final season in Chicago, he’ll leave as Bears’ all-time leader in TD passes. The embattled quarterback is thriving in Adam Gase’s offense, completing 62.8 percent of his pass attempts for 1,787 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions (89.6 passer-rating) in seven games.

The ball was thrown with serious velocity from about 30 yards out by Bears quarterback Jay Cutler.

San Diego (2-7) lost its fifth straight game for its longest skid since dropping six straight in 2011. It is the longest losing streak in coach Mike McCoy’s three seasons.

Rivers finished with 280 yards and one touchdown pass. Running back Danny Woodhead continued to be an all-purpose weapon with six catches for 78 yards and a touchdown catch, and he added 33 yards on the ground.

The Chargers made numerous mistakes. Rivers tried to mount a late comeback with two of his starting receivers – Keenan Allen and Floyd – gone, with slot receiver Stevie Johnson and tight end Antonio Gates not themselves, and reserve tight end Ladarius Green inactive. “We needed a “W”.

“I was out there trying to work hard”, Houston said, “and see if I could get something done”. The Chargers had 207 yards in the first half and 11 first downs, converting 5 of 7 first downs.

Cutler also gave up a fumble and an interception.

Miller often lines up in the backfield as a blocking back even though he never was considered much of a blocker before this year.

However, he lasted just one more play before retreating to the sideline with a groin injury.

Cutler broke the franchise record for touchdown passes when he found Martellus Bennett for a one-yard score.
