A cafe at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital has been identified as one of several Banner Health facilities across the nation affected by two recent cyberattacks.

The hackers targeted payment card data, including cardholder names, card numbers, expiration dates and internal verification codes, as the data was being routed through affected payment processing systems, the release stated.

In another cyberattack detected in mid-July, Banner Health says hackers may have gained access to patient information.

Banner encouraged food and beverage customers to monitor their payment card statements for unusual activity and encouraged patients to go over insurance statements to ensure they’re not being billed for services they did not receive.

Cyberattackers gained access to “a limited number” of Banner Health computer servers, including the servers that process payment card information where food and beverages are sold at the Phoenix-based health system. The possible health data breach was discovered on July 13, 2016 but an investigation from a hired forensics firm revealed that the initial attack occurred on June 17, 2016.

Additional information on the cyber attack and Banner Health’s response can be found by following the link on this page. It is the eighth largest among all breaches of healthcare information involving 500 or more individuals since September 2009, Modern Healthcare reported, citing the U.S. Department of Health and Service’s Office for Civil Rights. The attack, which began June 23, lasted for two weeks.

Dixon said people need to examine their medical records on an ongoing basis to ensure there’s no inaccurate medications or conditions. Anyone with questions is encouraged to contact the hospital at 1-855-223-4412 from 7 a.m.to 7 p.m. PST. Banner believes only those who purchased food at the listed locations between the dates are affected.

In addition to patient information, credit card data from customers at Banner food and beverage outlets were affected, officials said in a news release.

“While there may have been some small issues on our systems, they were nothing like this”, Byron said.

In a separate breach announced earlier this week, a hacker stole more than 150 GB of data from the Central Ohio Urology Group and posted a link to the stolen data online.
