Millions Brace For Crippling Winter Storm
The National Weather Service in Memphis has issued a winter storm warning for all of West Tennessee effective from midnight through 9 p.m. Friday.

“Heavy snow and blowing snow will cause unsafe conditions and will be a threat to life and property”, the National Weather Service warned.
In Washington, Mayor Muriel Bowser tweeted that more than 2,000 residents have joined the city’s Resident Snow Team to help elderly and disabled neighbors shovel out after the storm. Strong gusts, combined with accumulating snow or ice, could knock out power to many amid subfreezing temperatures – a prospect that Bowser called “my biggest concern”.
The Pacific storm is forecast to drop rain and snow on the western United States on Tuesday as it moves onshore, it said.
The weather service issued blizzard and winter storm watches for parts of Maryland, Washington, Virginia, West Virginia and Arkansas.
Mayor de Blasio addressed the upcoming storm Thursday morning, and urged New Yorkers to stay off of the streets and to use mass transit rather than drive during the storm. In NYC, somewhere between 8 inches to a foot is now predicted, but let’s face it, a lot could change in 48 hours.
“In addition to heavy snow, we’ll see really strong winds in the metro area, possibly 40 to 50 miles per hour”.
One person died in Forsyth County after the auto they were driving slid across a highway median because of slick roads. He said at a press conference Thursday morning that there was “no indication at this time that the city’s mass transit system will be shut down due to winter storms”.
Computer models predict that there will be enough moisture wrapping around the back side of the low pressure area to generate snow across north and parts of central Alabama starting as early as Friday morning.
All indications are that this will be one nasty snowstorm with the potential to dump up to a couple of feet of snow across the region.
Forecasters say most of New Jersey will likely see several inches of snow.
The NWS reported that there was “uncertainty” in snowfall from New York City to Boston. Accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are possible, making travel very hazardous or impossible. Powerful onshore winds could lead to hurricane-like coastal flooding. Those totals could be adjusted up or down depending on the exact track of the storm, which is targeting the mid-Atlantic region. The worst of the storm is expected Friday night through the day Saturday. Severe weather, including tornadoes, could hit Gulf states Thursday, and some of the country’s most populous cities could see blizzard-like conditions.

If 2 feet of snow fall in the nation’s capital, it will be the city’s second-biggest snowstorm ever: The largest was a 1922 storm that produced 28 inches.
