Millions celebrate Yoga Day in India

This day was marked for yoga by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who successfully lobbied the United Nations to dedicate 24 hours to the art in September 2014. “Just like the mobile phone is now a part of your life, make yoga too a part of your life…While it makes your mind stable, it rejuvenates your body and makes it dynamic”.

Punjab and Haryana Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki, who is also Union Territory Chandigarh’a Administrator, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar were among those present at the event. Other Ministers also led session across the country. “Anyone can do it anywhere”, said Modi, a keen yoga enthusiast on whose proposal the United Nations marked June 21 to be celebrated as the International Yoga Day every year.

New Delhi: A morning yoga session in Lodhi Gardens in New Delhi marks the global celebration.

In a precursor to Yoga Day, the Indian mission will host “Conversation with Yoga Masters” that will “seek to enrich our collective understanding of the unique features of Yoga and its role for the achievement of SDGs”. Apps were launched for smartphones to help people incorporate yoga into their day to day activities.

Organized by the Indian High Commission in collaboration with yoga institutions of the island, the celebrations began with a beginner’s yoga session for all participants and was followed by an advanced yoga demonstration and a demonstration of yoga in Kandyan dancing.

As per the Ambassador, yoga institutions and instructors have increased manifold in the past two years with more than 50 centres in Cairo alone.

Taking part in the state-level Yoga event in Thiruvananthapuram, the Minister asked the officials whether the “shloka” was necessary to be included in the programme schedule and suggested a commonly accepted prayer could have been included at the event. The government has been strategically publicizing this ancient Indian practice since a long time now.
