The recall now includes millions and millions of vehicles.

The airbag issues first came up in 2008 but it wasn’t into 2014 that NHTSA began probing the extent of the problem.

The Takata airbag recall continues to grow. Eight automakers are recalling an additional 12 million vehicles.

Before the latest expansion, automakers had recalled 28.8 million Takata inflators, so as many as 69 million could be recalled in the USA alone.

Under a November agreement with NHTSA, it agreed to phase out the volatile chemical ammonium nitrate used in the recalled inflators. This may cause the an over-aggressive combustion when the airbags are activated, creating excessive internal pressure to the inflator, causing the inflator body to rupture, sending metal fragments flying. Every single model affected by the recall is listed there. Unfortunately, the supply of parts may not be available until late summer or even the fall. That number can be found on the driver’s side of the dashboard near the windshield or on state vehicle registrations.
