Milos Raonic ends Stanislas Wawrinka’s Australian Open campaign in five-setter
Wawrinka came from two sets down but could not win the decider as Raonic won 6-4 6-3 5-7 4-6 6-3 to book his place in the quarter-finals.

Raonic has defeated Stan Wawrinka, the victor of the 2014 Australian Open and last year’s French Open.
“If I can sort of keep up with the efficiency moving forward, I ll have definitely some opportunities”.
Before the quarterfinals, Murray said he’d try to relax – which he is finding increasingly more hard.
He was impressive as he ended the run of Australian hope Bernard Tomic in the fourth round, setting up a quarterfinal clash with Spaniard David Ferrer on Wednesday afternoon.
But Wawrinka lifted his intensity and took the match to a fifth set. Then Novak Djokovic will open the evening session with an anticipated match against Kei Nishikori.
The world number two was rocked by a family health emergency when his father-in-law Nigel Sears, Ana Ivanovic’s coach, collapsed at the tournament and was rushed to hospital on Saturday.
Johanna Konta mounted a stirring comeback to upset Ekaterina Makarova 4-6 6-4 8-6.
The Tennis Integrity Unit has interviewed players involved in an Australian Open mixed-doubles match that reportedly attracted suspicious betting patterns with a gambling website.
After quickly polishing off her fourth-round match Monday, beating Barbaro Strycova 6-2, 6-4, Azarenka had a question for the crowd.
Murray will play Ferrer for the 19th time on tour in the quarters, the Briton enjoying a 12-6 lead from their previous meetings. Against a player in Raonic’s form, that simply wasn’t going to cut it, and the Canadian duly broke in the sixth game.
Raonic said he felt fitter, faster and more confident in going to the net more frequently, and all that combined to produce his first win on Melbourne Park’s center court.
Raonic, who beat Federer in the Brisbane International final and Wawrinka in the fourth round over the weekend, takes on Gael Monfils in his quarterfinal.
Tomic dropped serve for a third time to fall behind early in the second set and, even after gaining a foothold in the match with a break of his own for 1-1, the 16th seed gave it straight back.
Raonic’s serve in the fifth set made the difference, offering up no chances for his opponent to break while Wawrinka’s stuttered somewhat, his first serve percentage falling to just 52%. Raonic clinched the match in 3 hour, 44 minutes with a victor to the open court at love in the final game.
On the women’s side, two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka advanced with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Barbora Strycova 6-2, 6-4.
Next up she faces No. 7 Angelique Kerber, who beat fellow German Annika Beck 6-4, 6-0 in the preceding match on Rod Laver Arena.
“This is unreal @Gael_Monfils but I have to hold my breath every time” – Victoria Azarenka enjoying watching Monfils progress.

In years past, for Raonic to pull out a five set win against a top-five player, it would typically mean he’d have to pump out around 50 aces and pray for a little help in a breaker or two – but not last night; as the young Canadian let off 82 winners and imposed his will in rallies with the Swiss.
