“He was raising up with it”, Flynn said.

Smith’s grandfather says he had a lengthy criminal past, but was just trying to survive in the inner city. The city went insane (Saturday) night over Syville.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -A handful of Milwaukee’s Black Panthers say they want to meet with city leaders about violence on the city’s north side following the shooting of a black man by police.

The National Guard remained on standby, and Barrett suggested that Milwaukee might impose a broader curfew if Monday night brought additional violence.

With regard to the weekend of violent protesting that erupted following the fatal shooting, Smith said that violence is not the answer. Almost 40 percent of them African-Americans, who are heavily concentrated on the north side.

Mayor Tom Barrett says the city will more strictly enforce the ordinance at 10 p.m. “Get them home right now before more damage is done”, Barrett said. The shooting is being investigated by the state.

Four officers were hurt and one person suffered a gunshot wound, according to authorities.

There also have been incidents involving police, such as the shooting of a mentally ill black man by an officer in 2014. Chief Edward Flynn said police had not yet interviewed the officer who killed Smith, though the department has placed him on administrative leave. “Think about that feeling you had when you couldn’t find them, looking all over, and retracing your steps backwards”, the statement said. Flynn said the man “doesn’t seem to be in medical danger”. Flynn and Barrett have repeatedly stated that Smith refused to drop a loaded firearm he brandished at an officer. The mayor has implemented a 10 p.m. curfew for teenagers and leaders have issued a plea for peace.

Local official Khalif Rainey, who represents the area where the disturbances took place, suggested further unrest could take place if the underlying problems affecting Milwaukee’s black residents, such as poverty and joblessness, are not resolved.

“The vast majority of the residents are not interested in doing damage to where they live”, he said.

“It’s probably an array of different issues that got us where we were Saturday night and Sunday morning”, Walker said.

A police officer was taken to hospital to be treated for an injury after protesters threw a rock that broke the windshield of a squad auto.

He says the police department’s ShotSpotter technology detected 30 gunshots in the neighborhood overnight. This isn’t a clear-cut case of a white, racist cop targeting an innocent, young black man and gunning him down.

The fatal police shooting of a 23-year-old black man, Sylville Smith, touched off a weekend of tense and at times violent protests that left at least six businesses burned and several officers injured by flying objects Saturday night. Squad cars were pelted with bricks, rocks and bottles.

Police Chief Edward Flynn says 23-year-old Sylville Smith ran from a vehicle after it was stopped for what authorities described as suspicious behavior. The video will eventually be released, police said.

Smith’s death comes amid nationwide tensions over police use of force – which has spurred protests but also deadly violence against officers.
