Milwaukee Mayor: North side calming after violence

Police said the 23-year-old man was fleeing a traffic stop and was armed with a gun.

After several confrontations with police and pleas from city leaders, the crowds finally dispersed early Sunday morning. Smoke and orange flames filled the night sky.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation has been contacted to lead the investigation into an incident this afternoon in Milwaukee in which a police officer shot a suspect who was reportedly fleeing from a vehicle.

A police officer was hit in the head by a brick thrown through the car’s windows.

Trouble flared after a 23-year-old man armed with a stolen handgun was shot during a foot chase.

The mayor and Common Council President Ashanti Hamilton pleaded with the public for calm, and Barrett said there would be a strong police presence in the following days.

“If you love your son, if you love your daughter, text them, call them, pull them by their ears”, he added. He warned parents to ask their children to come home if they are out on the streets protesting.

The mayor said police presence will be strong as part of an “all-out-effort” to restore order.

Police said they made three arrests. The shooting occurred near the same place where a double homicide happened on August 9.

The latest violence comes after several police officers have been targeted and shot to death across the nation in recent weeks amid a nationwide outcry over the deaths of unarmed African Americans at the hands of police.

He said: “We understand the frustration people feel with the police community nationally”.

“I know this neighborhood very, very well”. “There are a lot of really good people who live in this neighborhood”.

Police say the handgun the suspect was armed with was taken during a burglary in Waukesha back in March. Police report that the man has an arrest record, but did not say what led to the traffic stop.

The police officer was not hurt, but was placed on administrative leave while an investigation into his conduct has been launched.

Mayor Barrett said the officer was wearing a body camera which was operating at the time of the shooting.
