A police officer was struck in the head with a brick that was thrown through a window, police said.
A woman who said she was a relative of the person killed by police told the crowd earlier: “We don’t want anyone else to go to jail or get hurt”, according to the Journal-Sentinel.
The unrest broke out several hours after a police officer shot and killed a man. Police said the 23-year-old man was fleeing a traffic stop. As of midnight, police are still trying to disperse crowds as rocks are being thrown at them. They said firefighters couldn’t extinguish the blaze because gunshots were being fired.
Angry crowds took to the streets in Milwaukee on Saturday night, hours after a police officer fatally shot an armed man during a foot chase, authorities said.
Two officers stopped two suspects driving in the 3200 block of N. 44th St. around 3:30 p.m. today. Police also tweeted that a gas station had been set on fire. He says the pair got out of the auto and ran and that the officers chased them.
The name of the officer who shot the man earlier was not immediately released.
An officer, a 24-year-old man with six years of service with the department, shot the victim during a foot chase. It has been revealed that the man had a considerable criminal record and the gun had allegedly been stolen during a burglary earlier on in the year.
The suspect, 23, was shot twice – in the arm and chest, the mayor said. Police say one man died at the scene and the other was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The officer’s name wasn’t immediately released. He will be placed on administrative duty during the investigation and subsequent review by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office.
