Tension eased on Monday night in Milwaukee, as teenagers respected a late night curfew to deter a third night of the rioting that hit the US Midwestern city following the police shooting of an armed black man. When police moved in and threatened arrests if the crowd didn’t disperse, some threw rocks, concrete and debris at the cops.
Milwaukee police said Monday that 14 people were arrested and 4 officers injured. Neither his race nor the officer’s was immediately released, nor were they identified.
Peaceful demonstrations in the Sherman Park area where Smith died turned into violent protests on Saturday and Sunday nights. Wisconsin is a concealed-carry state.
Police took to social media to keep the public updated during the overnight protests.
The 18-year-old Milwaukee man who was shot and wounded in Sunday night’s violence was retrieved by a police armoured vehicle and taken to a hospital. Three police cruisers had their windows shattered and one privately owned vehicle was torched, the chief said.
The death angered residents, as it echoes a series of deadly police incidents involving mainly African American suspects.
“There were no other reports of injuries and no major destruction of property”, the AP writes.
17 people were arrested, Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn said Sunday.
Flynn said on Sunday that the body camera video showed Smith was holding a gun and had turned toward the officer, and appeared to show that the officer acted within the law. Because the audio was delayed, he said, it was not clear when the officer fired his weapon.
“The community stepped up last night”, Flynn said.
“There were groups of young people in particular, who were traveling in the streets”, Mayor Tom Barrett told a news conference yesterday.
A Chicago-based communist revolutionary group blamed by Milwaukee’s police chief for stoking a second day of violence said that some of its members did go there to “support a revolution” but didn’t set out to cause trouble.
During the vigil, Kimberly Neal, the sister of Smith, said the family wanted prosecutors to charge the officer who shot him. Violence erupted as the night went on; six businesses were burned, and seven squad cars were damaged, Flynn said.
Earlier on Sunday, Gov. Scott Walker activated the Wisconsin National Guard after a request from Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke. He said they have been extraordinary – and have “shown tremendous professionalism and tremendous respect for the people in this community”.
Trump already had stops planned Tuesday in Eau Claire and Milwaukee before Saturday’s fatal shooting of 23-year-old Sylville K. Smith.
