Rockies 14, D’backs 7 • Nick Hundley hit a grand slam and pinch-hitter Daniel Descalso also homered in a seven-run eighth inning that sent Colorado to the win in Denver. The team will need to reverse this trend quickly, or they risk losing ground in an already tight race for the two Wild Card spots in the National League. Guerra pitched 3 1/3 shutout innings after sitting out a month with right-elbow inflammation.

Guerra reached his 70-pitch limit with runners on first and second and one out in the third. Carlos Torres made multiple throws over to keep Hanson close and nearly picked him off. Hanson chose to try to steal second and the Brewers saw it and Torres threw to first before they nailed him at second. Jacob Barnes, who was also activated from the DL on Friday after dealing with his own right elbow issues, got Jordy Mercer to fly out and struck out Taillon. Milwaukee’s Jimmy Nelson allowed one run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings.

In the bottom of the eighth with nobody out, Josh Harrison was on first base when an errant pick-off throw by pitcher Corey Knebel went toward the fence behind first base.

Pitching in a meaningful September for the first time as a professional, Pirates rookie Jameson Taillon put together a solid bounce-back performance after the Brewers touched him for five runs last Saturday. Martin Maldonado led off and was hit by a Taillon pitch.

“If I can help contribute in any way, that’s great”, said Taillon, who willingly accepted the move. I’m aware of where we’re at.

Ryan Braun hit his 25th home run of the season, but the Cincinnati Reds halted the Brewers’ six game win streak Sunday, beating Milwaukee 6-3 behind home runs from Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce.

Pirates: RHP Gerrit Cole (elbow inflammation) threw 30 fastballs before the game, the first time he had worked off a mound since going on the DL on August 25 with elbow inflammation.
