Milwaukee to enforce 10 pm curfew after 2 nights of protests

The city is trying to recover its calm after a night of disturbances on the weekend that have made it a new focus of tension as a result of police violence.

All this has led to a strict enforcement of a 10 p.m. curfew for teens in the city, FOX 6 reports. “This is not the place where you go to drive your auto around”. Sylville Smith, 23, was killed on Saturday afternoon after he was stopped for acting suspiciously and then fled. Louis sociology professor who studies police use of deadly force, said it would not necessarily have helped for police to release the officer’s race sooner.

“There is a curfew that will be more strictly enforced tonight for teenagers”, Barrett said.

Milwaukee is a city of about 600,000 people. They also burned cars and threw rocks at officers.

A spokesman for the Milwaukee police, Sgt. Timothy Gauerke, said Monday that officials were continuing to investigate the shooting of an 18-year-old man late Sunday along North Sherman Boulevard.

“I’m looking at a silent movie that doesn’t necessarily tell me everything that will come out in a thorough investigation”, Flynn said. Police didn’t say who shot the man but that they were looking for suspects. Officers used an armored vehicle to retrieve him and take him to a hospital.

Smith’s sister Kimberly Neal mourned a brother she described as a high school graduate who played basketball, not a “man with a lengthy arrest record” described by police. Last year, Smith was charged with recklessly endangering safety and witness intimidation in connection to a shooting incident, but prosecutors dropped the charges.

According to reports by CNN, damages caused on Monday were not as much as extensive as that of the first day of the unrest. Seven officers were injured, one after a rock crashed through his squad vehicle window, according to Flynn.

Alderman Khalif Rainey, who represents Sherman Park, says Milwaukee’s black residents are “tired of living under this oppression”.

Last year, a total of 990 people were fatally shot by police in the USA, according to the Post.

Milwaukee police are aware of threats on social media, against both the officer and police in general, Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn said Sunday.

Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn said at a press conference earlier Sunday that Smith turned toward an officer with a gun in his hand.

Mayor Tom Barrett said at a news conference Monday that youths and parents should take note that all teenagers must be off the streets by 10 p.m.

Peace may finally be returning to the streets of Milwaukee, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the city’s newly mandated curfew will be lifted anytime soon. In a video posted on Twitter, journalist Tim Pool announced he would be leaving Milwaukee due to the rising violence in the city.

Such inequality has afflicted many United States cities over the past three decades, sometimes stoking unrest when police use deadly force. Smith ran from police during a traffic stop. Another 14 people were arrested.

Gov. Scott Walker has already activated the Wisconsin National Guard in case their assistance is needed. He is also taping an appearance with Fox’s Sean Hannity on Tuesday evening in Milwaukee.

Many residents have expressed skepticism about the official account. “I’m going to urge that it be released as quickly as possible”, said Barrett, who has yet to see it.

Flynn told reporters Sunday that Smith ran several meters from his auto before the officer, who is also black, fired his gun.
