Minimum Wage Going Up

The University of Washington Bothell officials released a statement late Monday stating that they would be following in the main Seattle campus’ lead and raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour. The increase, which was announced earlier this year, will see the minimum wage increase from $11 per hour to $11.25 per hour.

Minimum wage rates for certain jobs and/or employees such as liquor servers, homeworkers, and students are also increasing at the same time.

Any increases will be announced by April 1st of each year, and will take effect on October 1st.

The last increase was on June 1, 2014 when the minimum saw an increase from $10.25 to $11 an hour. “It’s the right thing to do, and I’m glad we are positioned to get there”.

This decision applies to all workers on campus, including students and follows the law’s rules for large employers. Because the University funds its staff from a number of different revenue streams, deciding to establish the new minimum wage was not without its challenges.

Liquor servers will now be paid $9.80 per hour, up from $9.55 per hour.

State Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan said raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour could hurt businesses. But he didn't rule out adopting the wage increase
