Minnesota cop’s lawyer blames driver’s gun, not his race
Jones said that that there’s a false binary between folks who condemn police violence against black Americans, and those who support police officers.

Before this week, Schommer, who is 17, never questioned the police use of lethal force – an issue that has dominated news coverage over the last few years, in the wake of high-profile deaths of black Americans.
He also acknowledged the wide reach of the Facebook video, noting “what is depicted in the video, it just makes you sad to watch all of that unfold”. Dayton later said he stood by his statement even though it angered some in law enforcement.
The girlfriend of Philando Castile, who was fatally shot by police during a traffic stop in a St. Paul suburb, says the Dallas shootings were not caused by his death alone. Then on Thursday night, a sniper attack at a protest about the shootings killed five police officers.
The statement is a stark contrast to the one NRA CEO and Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre released following the murder of five Dallas police officers during a peaceful demonstration for Castile and Alton Sterling, another black man killed by police just days earlier in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Cellphone videos quickly surfaced of the incidents, adding to the anguish.
Clarence Castile said the family will hire someone to conduct an independent investigation.
Investigations into all three shootings are ongoing.
Castile’s fiancée Diamond Reynolds live-streamed the aftermath of the shooting via Facebook. Marchers block part of Interstate 94 in St. Paul, Minn., Saturday, July 9, 2016, during a protest sparked by the recent police killings of black men in Minnesota and Louisiana.
In Minneapolis, Gov. Mark Dalton said he thinks that if Castile had been white, the officer wouldn’t have shot him.
“I advised him that he should probably remove himself”, Kelly told Time.
A 911 call revealed that police responded to the scene after a homeless man claimed someone had pulled a gun on him outside the convenience store where Sterling was shot.
Shortly after St. Anthony police officer Jeronimo Yanez shot Philando Castile with his loved ones in the vehicle with him, Castile’s fiancee, Diamond Reynolds, began live-streaming the aftermath, which included graphic images of a bloody Castile moaning in pain as he took some of his last breaths. The agency said Yanez opened fire, striking Castile multiple times.
The post Lawyer of officer who killed Castile “not concerned” about criminal charges appeared first on PBS NewsHour. The interim police chief in nearby St. Anthony, Jon Mangseth, said he was aware of the video but had not seen it.
On CNN, newscaster Don Lemon gently explained that he was only raising the matter to give Sterling’s mother and uncle an opportunity to comment, since word of the police record had been revealed.
The previous year’s report includes a photo of Yanez solemnly standing guard at a memorial to fallen officers at the state Capitol.
Yanez’s attorney hasn’t returned several messages from The Associated Press. Dayton said he and other state officials would ask for stronger federal involvement.
Valire Castile, center, addresses hundreds at the JJ Hill Montessori School where her son Philando worked Thursday, July 7, 2016, in St. Paul, Minn. where a vigil was held following the shooting death by police of Philando Castile.
Diamond Reynolds said she and her deceased boyfriend did not match the descriptions on the audio clip.
“This has to cease”. He told protesters gathered outside his residence all day and night that no one should die over a traffic stop.

Dayton said those actions “are not representative” of the group of protesters as a whole. “This is not who we want to be as Americans”.
