The University of Minnesota Gopher football team began their 2016 season with a 30-23 win over the Oregon State Beavers on Thursday night.

“I think there were a couple balls that I missed down the seam, wish I could have gotten them back, could have gotten the ball out a little quicker”, Garretson said. A Garrett Owens point after attempt gave the Beavers the 7-0 lead. Coach Gary Andersen overhauled the schemes on offense and defense, contributing to the growing pains. A favorable-looking schedule has the Gophers being pegged as a dark horse to win the Big Ten West this year.

The last time he geared up for an actual game was for Utah State in 2014. That was two weeks after he engineered an upset of BYU, then ranked 18th in The Associated Press poll, on the road. After forcing the Gophers to punt, the Beavers were able to move the ball to the Minnesota 43 yard line, highlighted by a 22 yard screen pass from Garretson to Nall.

Freshman Seth Collins, as well as redshirt freshmen Marcus McMaryion and Nick Mitchell, all saw time at starter for the Beavers last season.

OREGON STATE: After going 2-10 in coach Gary Andersen’s first season previous year, the Beavers were hoping Garretson’s arrival would help speed the rebuilding process.

“I don’t expect a whole lot of change”.

The end result was tough to swallow for the Oregon State football team. The Vikings and Twins also play at the same time, and with the state fair ongoing and several high schools holding their football openers too. “We’ve gone though summer workouts to help build our bodies up and prepare for what’s coming this next season”.

To help stem the sales slump, new athletic director Mark Coyle halted a scheduled price increase that was authorized by his predecessor.

Was the second half of last season’s Civil War game a harbinger of better things ahead for Oregon State? “People only have so much money to spend”.

“You can try all the gimmicks you want to sell all the tickets you want, but the bottom line is you’ve got to win”, Claeys said. They were comfortable. You could see.

Bend and don’t break: The Beavers allowed 37.0 points per game last season and struggled to tackle in space. “We put up a pretty good fight”.

OSU trailed 24-23 late in the fourth quarter, but were in position to take the lead.

Nall has slimmed down to prepare for his position this season, after not being sure where he was going to play previous year. Travis was inspired by a recent drive by the stadium.

“I think it was beneficial for my confidence, for the offense and the team, knowing there was a guy that we could become comfortable with”, Garretson says. “To take those shots on two turnovers and then come in there and hang in there and stick some of those balls in there that he did. those are big-time plays”. “He’ll definitely be a part of what we’re doing this fall”.
